Brooks Anderson is a romantic painter. He is attuned to grandeur, beauty and mystery.  His landscapes are as much about poetry and drama as they are a chronicle of frequent treks through northern California and the Northwest coast. Anderson is distinctively aware of the echo of pattern and shape, light and shadow in his dense, yet lyrical compositions. Favoring late afternoon light, he captivates the viewer in the warmth of sunbathed areas, then draws him into the undefined mysteries of shade and darkness.

Anderson is a colorist. He builds with delicate oil glazes, orchestrating every shadow and highlight. Painting on canvas, neither color nor brushstroke gets absorbed...giving a more immediate and rhythmic impression to the landscape. Still relatively young, Anderson is gaining rapid recognition.  He is featured in John Arthur’s book, Spirit of Place: Contemporary Painting and the American Tradition.  Anderson’s paintings have been acquired by numerous public institutions including Metropolitan Life, Chemical Bank, and E.F. Hutton, and are placed internationally from New York to Tokyo.

Anderson captures nature’s power, drama, and spiritual presence in his richly painted images of the coastal landscape. He, too, gives texture to the contrasting surfaces of land and the ocean as they feed on each other in a battle for their own survival. A painter of great skill, he allows the brush and the application of paint to speak volumes for the emotions we feel in interaction with the land on a daily basis.
